I love to combine a good summer activity with some useful chore. It’s a great way for kids to get into the habit of doing chores (get them while they still think it’s fun).
It being another beautiful summer’s day, with the kids at home and in need of something to do. Otherwise they’ll just hang around the house all day, getting increasingly sluggish and clingy. Things have a tendency to go downhill from there.
I decided to combine two awesome things in a boys life: water and lego duplo blocks.
Together they make a lego duplo blocks wash.
This is a very easy summer activity. Quick to set up and with the sun the blocks are dry again in no time at all.
Quick wee side note: Because I know how hard it can be to come up with fun games each time, I’ve created a 7-day challenge for parents of toddlers and preschoolers. This is a great way to get started if you’ve fallen out of the habit of playing with your kids, or to learn about fresh ideas and activities.
Each day for 1 week, you will receive an e-mail with an activity that you can do with your kids. Join the newsletter and start your 7 days of play today!

Lego Duplo Blocks Wash Activity
You need some container for the water, and some soap or dish washing liquid.
Fill the container(s) with water.
Lay down a towel on the table for the lego duplo blocks to dry on.
And if, like us, you have a huge stack of lego duplo blocks to work with, you might want to fill another container with the lego duplo blocks that can be used for washing.
Otherwise you’ll end up with a whole pile of dripping wet duplo and that might be a bit of overkill…
Take everything and the kids outside.
I told them they should wash block for block (of course they didn’t) and then leave the clean blocks to dry on the towel.
They had a ball!
After a while, they also wanted to have a wooden spoon, because they were making lego duplo soup…
Sure, I’m sure that’s going to taste great…
In the end it kept them extremely happy for almost an hour!!
For a change they were good boys and left the lego duplo blocks neatly on the towel to dry.
They even managed to keep themselves more or less dry.
Not that it matters much in this kind of weather!
Easy summer activity
We left the lego duplo blocks outside for the rest of the afternoon. They were dry by the end of the afternoon when it was time to clean up before bed.
I upended the containers to empty them of what was left of the water, and wiped them dry again with a dish towel.
Altogether, I think this game took me less than 5 minutes to set up and clean up. And the boys had a blast!
We’ll be doing this again this summer!
